This magnificent tree was discovered by the Ancient Forest Alliance in December, 2009 in Avatar Grove within the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation. It was recently declared off limits to logging.

Incredible Red Cedars with huge twisted and contorted burls are found in large numbers throughout the grove including this one that’s been dubbed “Canada’s Gnarliest Tree”.

Avatar Grove is a phenomenal – yet threatened – stand of giant old-growth Douglas fir and red cedar beside Gordon River, which is approximately 15 minutes away from Port Renfrew, BC on a dirt/paved road.  Beautiful fern draped creeks with moss-covered rocks and even small waterfalls pass through the misty woods along their way to the river.

Although I normally live and work as a photographer in Nanaimo, BC I often travel to remote locations on Vancouver Island to take my own personal photographs.
